Mismatched Bridesmaids Dresses

Mismatched bridesmaids’ dresses have been all the rage lately. Calling them “mismatched” is a bit of a misnomer. They still match, they just aren’t exactly the same dress. They might be a mix of styles and carefully corresponding colors, or the same color but different styles.

I’ve been thinking a lot about bridesmaid style lately (more on that below!) and have noticed a few problems?that brides tend to run into when they decide to go with mismatched dresses.

Problem No. 1: You rarely see photos of mismatching gone wrong.

How many times have you looked at a photo of mismatched bridesmaids and seen one bridesmaid in cream, one in bright green, and one in navy blue? I’d guess never, but I bet there’s a bride out there who has made those colors look good together, so I’ll hold my tongue.

The point is, you hardly ever see photos of mismatched bridesmaids that don’t look…well,报码室开奖结果开马结果公布一一, matched. The only inspiration out there is from when a bridal party pulled off the look flawlessly, which doesn’t always happen.

Problem No. 2: Styled shoots make it look easy.

The easiest way to get your bridal party into perfectly mismatched dresses is to have a stylist or photographer do it for you. I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe a quarter of?mismatched bridesmaids inspiration photos are from styled shoots and not real weddings.

With real weddings,情势多样, you have to contend with different personalities, different wants, different color preferences. With a styled shoot, there’s a ton of editorial control. And also models, who are getting paid to wear whatever the stylist hands them.

Problem No. 3: It is NOT easy to pull off.

I think sometimes brides choose to do mismatched dresses because they think it’ll be easier than finding a dress that every lady loves and looks good in. And they also want to give their bridesmaids some freedom/seem more like a “cool bride” and less like a style dictator.

Problems arise when a bride’s expectations clash with the reality of what her ‘maids want. It takes a lot of wrangling to get every bridesmaid into a dress they love and have no two dresses look exactly the same. In some situations, it might even be more work than choosing one dress they all can get on board with.

So how can you achieve mismatched bridesmaid success?

First, figure out if you want your ‘maids to wear whatever they want or if you want the mismatched-matchy look as in the photos I shared above. If you’re fine with whatever dresses they choose, awesome! You’re done.

If you decide to go with coordinating but mismatched bridesmaids, be very specific about what you want your ladies to wear. “Pick a pink dress” is not specific and probably won’t help you achieve the look you’re going for. “Pick a floor-length, chiffon blush dress” is more like it.

Finally, coordinate, coordinate, coordinate. Start a group text or a group chat on Facebook where your ‘maids can share the dresses they’re looking at. Ask your MOH or a stylish bridesmaid to be in charge of putting the look together if you’re stressed and crunched for time.

You might be wondering why I’ve been thinking so much about mismatched bridesmaids’ dresses lately if I only have a matron of honor. I decided a few weeks ago to add Friend W?to our wedding party, and I’m psyched to tell you that she said yes! I’ll write more about what Friend W and MOH R will be wearing in a future post.

Are you doing mismatched bridesmaids’ dresses? Why or why not?
